Diabetic Ketoacidosis

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a type of diabetes that result from accumulation of blood acids known as ketones. The accumulation of ketones occurs when the levels of insulin in blood is very low. Insulin mainly helps in regulating sugar levels in blood. It plays a significant role in helping sugar enter the cells. In the event the levels of insulin in blood is very low, the body starts breaking down fats to produce energy needed to support body functions and processes. It is this process of breaking down stored fats that lead to accumulation of ketones in the bloodstream. If not treated early enough, it escalates into diabetic ketoacidosis.

Common symptoms

The signs and symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis usually manifest very quickly, sometimes within a single day. Some of the signs and symptoms are urinating frequently, excessive thirst, vomiting or nausea, feeling weak or fatigue, pain in the abdomen and short breath. Specific signs and symptoms which can be detected using urine testing kits or home blood are high levels of sugar in the blood and high levels of ketone in urine.

It is advisable to see a doctor when you start vomiting and lose appetite for food or drinks. Additionally, when the blood level is beyond range and does not respond to home-based therapies. When levels of ketone in urine are high, it is also advisable to seek medical attention.

The Risk Factor

The risk of developing diabetic ketoacidosis is exceptionally high in people with type 1 diabetes. Additionally, frequent skipping of insulin doses increases raises chances of contracting diabetic ketoacidosis. Diabetic ketoacidosis rarely occur in people with type 2 diabetes. Sometimes diabetic ketoacidosis is the first sign that manifests in a person developing diabetes. Untreated diabetic ketoacidosis is can be very deadly. It is therefore advisable that one arrests the situation at the earliest stage possible before it escalates into full blown diabetes.
